’Tis the Season
’Tis the cold and flu season, so what do you do to boost resistance? There is no cure for a cold or the flu but there are some things you can do to help your body fight off viruses: exercising regularly, drinking plenty of fluids, eating chicken soup to help loosen the mucus, and staying home in bed to rest.

S.A.I.D. the Weight Trainer
When I was young, my parents took me to the YMCA for swimming lessons. On our way to the lockers, we passed the squash courts and the weight room. The courts intrigued me but the weight room intimidated me.

Truth about Stretching
As an avid walker, one of the things that I like best is to stretch after a long walk. I see it as a treat. It’s a way to tell my body that the tough stuff is over and I can relax.

Goals & Rewards
Goal planning is one of my favourite activities. I would like nothing more than to sit down with pen in hand and a desk-sized calendar, to map out my goals. This is one of the reasons I loved working as a personal trainer. It was fun for me to creatively plan a health regime for my clients. The hard part was for them – sticking to it.

Intense Interest
Spring is in full bloom, and with it comes the excitement to get outdoors and try new activities. If you’ve been indoors this winter, watching sports more than participating in them, be especially careful when you re-start your exercise program. A good indicator of how hard you are working is the “Talk Test.”

Calories
As a child, I remember my mother going on an extreme, low-calorie diet – eating only cabbage soup and bananas. I was disgusted by the soup, but impressed that she lost weight in such a short time. However, the weight loss didn’t stick. Eventually, she went back to eating normally and gained back the weight she had lost. Dramatically cutting calories, therefore, is not the “be all and end all” of dieting.
