Teen Challenge Opens New Women’s Centre
|
By Lisa Hall Wilson
A message of hope for the hurting will be delivered by Billy and Ruth Graham’s youngest daughter Ruth, when she is keynote speaker at the Teen Challenge GTA women’s centre grand opening and dedication on Saturday September 26, 2009.
The day of celebration—to be held at Teen Challenge’s newest facility just outside of King City—will be hosted by Lorna Dueck. David Mainse will also be on hand to lead the dedication prayer. Students will share their miraculous testimonies, and the Teen Challenge National Choir from the London, Ont. area men’s centre will sing. Visitors will be able to take a guided tour of the facilities that will house more than 55 women, once renovations are complete.

Situated on eighty-seven secluded acres, the former retreat centre is 44,000 square feet and includes accommodations for students and staff, a chapel, classrooms and an industrial kitchen. The centre will have space for 55 students when renovations are complete.
“For years, when a woman called we had nothing to offer them outside B.C. Teen Challenge GTA is our answer to that plea for help,” says Teen Challenge GTA Centre Director Garry Cox. “We want everyone to know that our doors are open—right now.”
Teen Challenge is a faith-based residential drug and alcohol rehabilitation program for those over 18 with a documented cure rate of more than 70 percent among graduates. Students are apart from family and friends for the duration of the 12-month program, presenting unique hurdles to women with children.
According to the 2009 UN Report on Drugs, Canada is becoming known worldwide as a leading manufacturer of ecstasy and methamphetamine. A recent Statistics Canada report cites that over a period of 10 years, the number of Canadians using an illicit substance in their lifetime rose to 45 percent.
Teen Challenge began 50 years ago with David Wilkerson’s ministry to street youth in New York City. Global Teen Challenge operates in 82 countries with over 1,000 independent locations.
